Based on the popularity of its inaugural Kids Grape Camp in 2008, The Lodge at Geneva-on-the-Lake is offering families even more opportunities in 2009 to scour a local vineyard in search of scavenger hunt clues, enjoy grape stories by a roaring campfire...all the while learning about the Northeast Ohio grape industry. A unique family experience the whole family will love, Kids Grape Camps are scheduled for June 25-26, July 23-24 and August 20-21.

Upon arrival at The Lodge on Thursday afternoon, families will be treated to a welcome reception at 5:30 pm, followed by a pizza dinner. Guests are invited to participate in a grape tasting to learn the differences between grape varieties and their juices.

Families can then enjoy smores and campfire stories along the Lake Erie shoreline.  The evening's featured book is “The Grapes Grow Sweet,” a tale about a four-year-olds dream of his grape growing family working together to harvest their vineyard. The book takes readers through the “seasons of the vine,” from winter's dormancy and spring's promise to summer's ripening fruit and fall's harvest.

On Friday, guests will enjoy a complimentary breakfast at Horizons Restaurant and a nature walk into GenevaState Park before departing for a tour to Chalet Debonne Vineyards in Madison. While touring Ohio's largest estate winery, Grape Camp participants will learn about different types of grapes and how they're grown and harvested in Northeast Ohio. Guests can pick their own grapes while participating in a vineyard scavenger hunt. A boxed lunch and grape-related craft will also be provided.

“I think the parents enjoyed last year's Grape Camp as much as the kids did,” said Cindy Lindberg of Debonne Vineyards. “The best part is the scavenger hunt, where the kids go looking for all kinds of things used for the process of harvesting grapes. They actually get to see the whole process.”

The Grape Camp package starts at $199 (June) and $209 (July and August) plus tax and includes Thursday overnight accommodations for two adults and one child, age 5-12 years. Additional children and adults can be added to the package for $50 plus tax each.
