GENEVA-ON-THE-LAKE, Ohio (May 19, 2008) - For nearly 100 years, Americans have been honoring fathers. This long-standing tradition continues as The Lodge at Geneva-on-the-Lake hosts a Father's Day Poolside Beer & BBQ on Sunday, June 15 from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Guests can also treat Dad to a Sunday getaway on the lake, with The Lodge's Spring Special Bed and Breakfast package, which includes Sunday night accommodations and breakfast for two from $89 plus tax.

The idea of Father's Day was conceived by Sonora Dodd of Spokane, Wash., to honor her father, William Smart, a widowed Civil War veteran who was left to raise his six children. Spokane's mayor proclaimed June 19, 1910 as the first Father's Day celebration because it was the month of Smart's birth. The first presidential proclamation honoring fathers was issued in 1966 when President Lyndon Johnson designated the third Sunday in June as Father's Day. Father's Day has been celebrated annually since 1972 when President Richard Nixon signed the public law that made it permanent. Today, there are 64.3 million fathers celebrating Father's Day in the United States and the holiday is also celebrated around the world.

Father's Favorites Abound
The Lodge's annual Father's Day celebration will include traditional BBQ favorites served alongside The Lodge's new outdoor pool complex. Executive Chef Stephen Gary will serve up hickory BBQ chicken quarters, beef burgers with all the fixin's, pulled BBQ pork with sesame hoagie rolls, Dijon mustard potato salad, creamy cole slaw, buttered corn on the cob, assorted canned soft drinks and caramel apple cobbler for dessert. To celebrate Father's Day, the first beer draft for Dads (21 and over) is on the house. "It's Father's Day and what dad doesn't like relaxing by the pool and having a great BBQ, especially one that he doesn't have to make himself," said Executive Chef Stephen Gary. "Not only will guests be able to enjoy fantastic views of Lake Erie, but they will be treated to classic summertime favorites that the entire family will enjoy."

The Father's Day Poolside Beer & BBQ is $18 for adults; $16 for seniors over age 65, and $10 for children ages 4 – 12. Children 3 and under are free. The Father's Day BBQ will be held rain or shine, and will be relocated to Horizons restaurant in the case of inclement weather. For reservations, call (440) 466-7100, Press "2."

The Lodge will also following the tradition of a Father's Day hiking tour, which is celebrated in Germany. While German's "Vatertag" (Father's Day) hike is traditionally a males-only event, The Lodge is inviting all guests to enjoy a hike through Geneva State Park following the Poolside BBQ. Guests are also welcome to spend the afternoon swimming at The Lodge's new outdoor pool complex.
