GENEVA-ON-THE-LAKE, Ohio (Sept. 28, 2007)
– Wine lovers discover the secrets of wine making in Northeast Ohio with the premier of the KSU Wine School Package at the Lodge & Conference Center at Geneva-on-the-Lake.  Special wine classes by Kent State University-Ashtabula are the highlight of the weekend that takes a closer look at wine from the vineyard to the glass.
Guests have their option of two different weekends for their getaway, Friday through Sunday, Oct. 26 through 28, 2007, or Nov. 9 through 11, 2007.
Experience Wine Classes in a Vineyard
Opportunities abound to learn more about wine and winemaking as nationally recognized wine professionals share their knowledge on a wide array of topics, from grape cultivation to a behind-the-scenes look at the wine business. The weekend begins with a Friday evening welcome wine tasting reception and continues with the following itinerary:
·        Guests are transported to a vineyard to walk among the grapevines to learn:  the science of grape growing (viticulture); Northeast Ohio grape production; how soil and geography (Lake Erie, hills and valleys) affect grapes; and how grapes are processed into wine (enology).
·        During lunch at a winery, a wine expert will explain current issues and challenges in wine production and describe regional vintner cellar techniques. Guests will be invited to taste wine straight from the barrel and compare wines.
·        The day concludes with dinner at the Lodge, a sampling of area wines, and a discussion about the wine business, including marketing and logistics of wine distribution and how Northeast Ohio varieties play a part in the region and the world.
·        During a mid-morning program, guests learn about wine industry trends world-wide and in Ashtabula County; how different wine glasses enhance the tasting experience; how bottle shapes promote preservation and aging. Terminology and understanding a wine label will also be discussed.
The KSU Difference
Prior to arrival, guests have the opportunity to brush up on their wine knowledge with online preliminary wine studies through Kent State University-Ashtabula.  Guests receive a wine dictionary and vineyard handbook during Friday’s reception. On Sunday, guests are awarded a certificate from Kent State University upon completion of the program.
